Boulder Colors is made up of Amanda and Peng Fan, but it is a true family business. We started this venture as a homeschooling project and our kids are very much involved in many parts of the process to this day. We also love foraging for ingredients as a family!
We make all our own pigments and paints using locally grown plants and locally sourced food waste. Our pigments are made using the lake pigment process - we extract the dye from organic matter, bind it to a metal mordant, and precipitate it into a solid we then dehydrate and grind into pure pigment power. Our handmade pigments are then mixed with a watercolor binder made of plum and cherry tree syrup, vegetable glycerin, and water.
Boulder Colors exists, first and foremost, to honor the hard work of small scale farmers. Ten percent of every sale goes to support our local famers (recipients and projects change seasonally, follow us on Instagram to see who we're currently working with).
